Exercises
Songwriting is like everything else. The more songs you write, the better at it you get.
Legend has it that the first song John Prine wrote was Sam Stone, shortly after buying his first guitar.
I wish I were that talented.
Every day.
Anyway, for the rest of us mere mortals, practice makes, if not perfect, at least better.
With that in mind, I will be offering a series of songwriting exercise suggestions in case you were to have hit a rut. These little challenges will give you a word, a theme, a line, a chord structure, a key, etc… and ask you to write a song based on that suggestion.
I hope that you will go ahead and write some songs of your own.
Don’t be bashful or worried. Not everyone can write a hit – I sure haven’t, nor do I pretend to be a gifted songwriter. But we can all enjoy the creative process and the peace of mind it can bring!
